If you are not sure about joining the Symphony Orchestra for any reason, feel free to email us with any questions, or simply come along to one of our concerts to decide if you’d like to take part. We are a friendly orchestra with members from all walks of life, who simply enjoy making music together.
SWSO generally performs 4-5 concerts each year, in and around Saffron Walden – most frequently at the acoustically superb Saffron Hall. Our autumn schedule usually includes a popular children’s concert as part of the Saffron Walden Literary festival.
We do not audition members, but do ask for a minimum standard (generally at least grade six depending on the instrument). We are always pleased to hear from string and brass players in particular.
While many of our players travel some distance to play with us, we are of course particularly interested to hear from orchestral musicians who live near Saffron Walden or in the district of Uttlesford.
Our rehearsal schedule usually comprises the 4-5 Sunday evenings preceding each concert, under the guidance of our Music Director and Conductor, Richard Hull. Rehearsals take place at Chesterfords Community Centre.

We understand that everyone has work and family commitments and therefore understand the need for flexibility – if you can’t play in every concert this is fine (though please do attend most rehearsals for any concert you would like to play in).
Please note:
We may retain your name and contact details in our lists of players and members. We will use this information to advise you about arrangements for rehearsals, concerts and other matters relating to the administration of the Orchestra as may be necessary. We may also pass on to you information about other musical events which might be of interest to you unless you specifically tell us not to do so. We will not divulge the information we hold about you to any other third party without your specific consent.
